How NHL player-card collecting works on IceShift

On IceShift, opening a fantasy hockey pack also builds a permanent collection of digital player cards. Every card you acquire stays in your collection, even if you stop using that player in your fantasy roster.

Your roster changes as you make competitive decisions. Your collection keeps a record of the cards you have obtained along the way.

What does a player card represent?

Each IceShift card represents a particular combination of:

  • an NHL player;
  • a season;
  • an NHL team.
PlayerOne NHL player
SeasonOne season
NHL teamOne team appearance
Card identityOne checklist item
Card identities can differ while the player remains one competitive roster player.

That means a player can have different cards across seasons, or cards for more than one team within the same season.

Those cards are separate collection items. They do not create separate versions of the player for your competitive roster: the same player remains one roster player.

Your first pack starts your collection

When you join the fantasy game, your starter pack contains 30 unique players: 18 forwards, nine defensemen and three goalies.

Opening the pack adds its cards to your collection.

Opening it adds their cards to your collection and gives you your starting competitive roster.

You can then choose who belongs in your active lineup and who stays on the taxi squad. Those decisions affect fantasy scoring, but they do not remove cards from your collection.

You can start playing and build your collection through the core fantasy game for free.

Daily packs add more cards

After all games in the previous fantasy day are final, a six-card pack becomes available for the next fantasy game day:

  • three forwards;
  • two defensemen;
  • one goalie.

All six cards enter your collection before roster decisions.

A fantasy game day is a calendar date with NHL games. Off-days do not create additional pack opportunities.

All six cards enter your collection when you open the pack, before you decide whether to use any of the players.

You might keep several new players, keep one, or leave your competitive roster unchanged. The cards remain yours in every case.

Daily packs exclude players already on your competitive roster. A player you previously cut can appear again.

Cutting a player does not mean losing their card

Suppose you open a pack and decide to replace a forward on your roster.

You add the new forward and cut an existing one, while keeping your roster valid under the position and salary-cap rules. The outgoing player leaves your competitive team, but their card stays in your collection.

The same applies to pack cards you never use on the roster. Collection ownership does not depend on playing time, active-lineup selection or keeping a player in reserve.

Cards also remain in your collection after a fantasy season ends.

What happens when you get the same card again?

Repeat acquisitions are counted. They do not give you a second playable copy of the player.

There is also a difference between acquiring the same card again and obtaining a different card for the same player.

A card from another season or NHL team has a different collection identity. It can therefore be a separate item in the checklist, while the player still remains a single competitive roster player.

Explore the catalog and checklists

You can browse the public card catalog without an account. Player profiles show their supported cards, and team-season pages show the corresponding team checklist.

These pages help you see which cards exist and how they relate to players, teams and seasons.

The catalog shows which cards you can collect. In your collection, obtained cards fill their slots and display the player image. Cards you haven’t collected appear as empty slots with a generic player silhouette. Player, team, season and position details remain visible.

You can browse the collectible slots without signing in. Sign in to see your own collected cards and collection progress.

Track your collection’s progress

Your personal collection dashboard shows current-season completion across the full checklist, with breakdowns by division and team.

You can use it to see where your collection is growing and which team checklists still have gaps. Completion reflects cards acquired; it is separate from your fantasy rank.

Completion uses unique card identities, not the total number of times cards were acquired.

The dashboard also displays your three most recent pack groups. Your full acquisition history spans all seasons and can be viewed as cards or a compact list.

Collecting and competing serve different goals

For fantasy competition, you choose a valid roster and decide which players should be active. Only active players score, and both roster salary caps apply.

For collecting, the aim can be broader: filling a team checklist, following a favourite player across seasons, or adding new player cards to your collection.

You do not need to keep a card’s player on your roster to make progress in the collection. Nor does completing a checklist add fantasy points.

Starter and daily packs add cards to your collection.

Start with a pack, keep the collection

Your first pack gives you a team to play with and a collection to build. After that, each opened pack creates two opportunities: reconsider your roster and add cards that stay with you.
